Maybe I'm just sensitive to this stuff today May. 22nd, 2008 @ 01:53 pm

Or maybe it's everybody be inconsiderate at Microsoft day.

First with a minor annoyance:
I start off with going to the breakroom to get my morning coffee (from the little Starbucks iCup apparatus that is now our source of any hot beverage) ... this morning there is a line of 4 or 5 people waiting to brew themselves a cup of coffee (which takes like a minute or so) .. A lady walks in with cup, grabs some tea and goes to the water cooler to dispense some hot water.. guess what? No hot water from the water dispenser. Guess what else? The iCup will dispense hot water at the push of a button as well. Anybody nice enough to let her slip in for 2 or 3 seconds in front of them to grab some hot water so she doesn't have to wait for 4 people to brew full cups of coffee? Nope.. not a one of them. Of course, I was willing to take the 3 second hit from my day of work and let her go in front of me. Sad thing is, the cup of coffee tasted like shit anyways.

Now after that, I avoid people for a few hours but, now I need lunch. I go buy a little somethin out of the vending machine to pop in the microwave for 60 seconds. As I am unwrapping it to put it in (mind you standing right next to the microwave), someone walks in, grabs a dish out of the freezer, sets the microwave for 5 minutes and leaves (within a span that couldn't have been more that 150 milliseconds) ...On a normal day, I would've gotten my revenge by taking their dish out of the microwave and putting it back in the freezer but, today I felt the only redemption I would get would be by jamming a plastic fork between their 7th and 8th vertebrae so, I abstained.

When did people stop noticing that there are other people in this world? And sometimes acknowledging their existence for a few seconds of your day actually does some good...

Or maybe I'm just sensitive.

Shoes May. 22nd, 2008 @ 12:10 am

It took two tries, but I finally found a summer sandal. The first pair (from Macy's) left my legs in so much pain after 2 hours that I took 'em back. I should have known better. I just can't handle shoes from unknown brands. Best to stick with my Keen's and Dansko's.

New Toys May. 21st, 2008 @ 01:17 pm

Got a couple new things this weekend.

First thing is that I got the Senseo maker for $15 through a deal the Jen found on the LJ's. It's something that I've had at work for some time so I'm already kind of spoiled, but I'm happy that I can have my portioned coffee with a little creamer and not have a bunch left over to go bad. I will try to get the skinny on this deal and repost it if anyone else would be interested in getting one as well.

The big haul came in the form of the King Sized Sealy Memory Foam Matress we got from Sleepers in Seattle. Sadly I had to buy it outright with my savings, since neither of us qualified for financing, but I will say that the comfort is well worth the inconveience. I've only had it for a couple days but it's sad to say I'm looking forward to going to bed early. =/ If anyone is curious in trying it out for a bit, to see if you like it, just let us know.

There's no one there May. 21st, 2008 @ 10:10 am

Ronan has been growling and barking at the balcony for almost 2 full days now. It's really odd. I've taken him out there to show him that no one was there. I've closed the blinds. I've moved things around. He'll forget for an hour or so, then in the middle of playing with a toy, he'll drop it and start barking, tailed tucked.

He's so weird. I hope he stops soon.

I am also really excited about the UW. I feel like I accomplished something, especially after the UW rejected a record number of applicants this month. I've been accepted as a full junior for Fall quarter. I'm only weeks away from earning my A.A. at BCC as well. It feels so good to accomplish a few of my goals.

Nutritional information May. 21st, 2008 @ 09:48 am
[info]wesa
Many restaurants today offer low calorie and low fat entrees on their menus to help you make healthier choices. Most of the time, those menu items list out their promised nutritional values beside the entrée.

We tested the ‘low fat, low calorie’ menu options from some of the restaurants where you dine and learned that you may be getting a lot more than you ordered.

Here's the full list.

Examples:

TACO BELL FRESCO GRILLED STEAK SOFT TACO: stated calories: 160. actual calories: 297. stated saturated fat: 4.5grams. actual saturated fat: 19.5grams.

MACARONI GRILL POLLO MAGRO "SKINNY CHICKEN": stated calories: 500. actual calories: 1022. stated saturated fat: 6grams. actual saturated fat: 49grams.

Lethargic May. 19th, 2008 @ 05:17 pm
[info]wesa
I skipped school today. I only attend classes on campus 2 days a week, so this is pretty abnormal for me.

I managed to complete 2 sections of math (out of 10) in hopes that I can pass my math test next Tuesday. I've managed to post the work and answers to 4 out of 6 questions of the group project (thank you so much for the help guys) and told the other 2 students who are trying to participate that the last 2 questions are on them, I've done more than my fair share.

I have a few more hours of homework to complete tonight. I'm so lethargic though. I just slept for 2 hours on the couch and now I'm groggy. Probably dehydration or the weather. It's cloudy and 74 degrees...meh.

Tonight's dinner: hamburgers and potato salad. Looks strangely like dinner last night. We had an impromptu BBQ with a few friends last night and managed to drink 30 beers, eat almost 2lbs of hamburger, 2lbs of potato salad that I threw together, and a pound of asparagus between the 5 of us. So delicious.

Maybe the walk to Carl's bus stop will wake me up somewhat.

Urg. I am full of food.

I spent the early afternoon at the cheese-fest at the market, and then the late afternoon/early evening grilling foods on my grandpa's barbecue. It's nothing special, but I inherited it a few years back whilst my grandma was cleaning out her house.

There was some Rock Band played, and a boardgame. In general, it was lots of fun and the food was yummy.

This week in movieland:

Gamers - If you've ever played a tabletop RPG, you need to see this movie. I laughed until my sides hurt. For a low-budget film, this one had some fantastic writing and totally appropriate casting.

Youth Without Youth - Ugh. I couldn't finish this one. Francis Ford Coppola has written and directed a self-indulgent, pretentious, wank-fest. From the quasi-arthaus camerawork to the unintelligible dialogue, this movie stinks.

Prince Caspian - Mediocre. Not bad, but not great. It follows the books reasonably well, which is part of the problem. In general, I bitch about filmmakers who deviate from the author's vision. However, when it comes to C.S. Lewis and his preachy parables, deviation would be welcome, if only to liven up the stiff, overbearing lectures on Christian morality.

There are probably others I'm forgetting. Those will have to wait for later. Now I go pass out into a food coma.

I posted this about a year ago …

After being in Cellular TS for the last few years, there have been many cell phones which have crossed my path.

Today I was at lunch with most of my team. On the way there we were talking about some of the tech calls we have heard or dealt with. Out of the blue I thought of a name for a new cell phone, like the Razr, Katana, Slider, Sidekick and so on.

What is this new cell phone name you ask?

The Zipper of course. Imagine the support calls.....

Sir have you opened your Zipper yet? Is your Zipper turned on? When did you last check the firmware on your Zipper? .....

I think you get the idea.

Some of the ideas friends posted to this were:

did you get your zipper wet?
You said your zipper is stuck?
Open your zipper, and press the "on" button firmly but gently to turn it on.

How do I set my Zipper to vibrate?

im sorry your zipper doesnt seem to be working.

"No sir, dropping your zipper is not covered by your warranty."
"I'd love to assist you in playing games with your zipper."
"You're having trouble connecting with your zipper? There could be some interference."

"Your zipper is roaming?"

Your Zipper is running hot. Try toning it down, it'll work more smoothly and easily if you keep your head in check.
Or:
Your Zipper is fine. Sure, everyone else has one, but you need to learn to be "okay" with yours.

"So you have damaged your Zipper?"
"I am sorry Sir water damage is not covered ont he warranty plan you have on your Zipper."

"Sir did you say you dropped your Zipper in a puddle?"
"I am sorry Sir but the warranty plan on your Zipper does not cover water damage."

I've been jonesing for some bubble tea lately.  Unfortunately, the bubble tea place that Rebecca and I used to go to in the International District has closed :(

Does anyone have any recommendations for really good bubble tea in the Seattle area?  Preferably somewhat near Greenlake, Greenwood or the U-District, so I don't have to drive for half an hour just to get a fix.  Also preferably someplace that uses real fruit :)

Open response to Aaron Greenberg. May. 9th, 2008 @ 12:42 pm
[info]wakko
In response to this bunch of spindoctoring and headline grabbing: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=188658

Aaron -

You ask how come Blu-ray did not result in better games? You ask where is the complete 1080p game library we were promised?

Simple. Developers are developing for the PS3 *and* your shitty XBox 360. All of the platform exclusive titles *have* been better games exactly *because* of their exclusivity. The platform exclusive titles *have* been running at 1080p.

Unfortunately, for the developers that must cripple their game by putting it on a console that doesn't have the capabilities of the PS3, they're forced to leave content out, or scale features back because the Xbox 360 simply doesn't have the capability or runs the very likely risk of dropping dead from the inability to effectively cool your console. There was even a developer who recently came out and said as much.

Is Sony blameless? Hell no. As you accurately point out, nearly every single tech demo from GDC and E3 of years past has been delayed. But are delays really something to crow about? I seem to remember some truism about people in glass houses. It might apply here.

You ask where are the achievements?

I ask, why do I need achievements to cover up for a lack of gameplay?

I played through all 10 hours of Heavenly Sword. I don't see that I gain anything from repetitively replaying it simply to gain some merit badge that declares my ability to withstand the same content over and over and over again.

I would much rather play games without achievements simply because I believe that achievements are a crutch that is employed when the game can not stand on its own without them. Again, Heavenly Sword is a great example of this. Ten hours of gameplay is not worth my sixty dollars. I'm so happy I rented this instead of buying it and subsequently feeling cheated out of my hard earned money. I'd feel similarly cheated by paying normal movie ticket prices for a forty-five minute movie. Achievements are simply not a solution to a short game. It does not enhance your game. It does not add playable content to your game. It simply distracts the gullible from the fact that you've shipped a shorter game. It dupes the buyer into spending the same money for less actual content.

I'll take games like Echochrome and Patapon over merit badges every time.

Overall, Mr. Greenberg, your questions appear to have been shat out of your word hole without adequate employment of your think-box. You're an idiot who can't see beyond the end of his own nose. With GTA4 out and demonstrating better graphic quality and less pop-in on the PS3, and MGS4 around the corner, we're now seeing the global sales of PS3 accelerating past the Xbox360. Your mediocre console is quickly becoming less and less relevant to the console war.

Microsoft took second place last generation. This time around, I hope you guys can be content with dead last this time around.
